BSHM Small Research Grants Scheme
The aim of the BSHM small grants scheme is to provide small grants (from £100 to £500) for specific research purposes, such as archival visits, research trips, and archival copying costs. Preference will be given to applications that have clear and demonstrable outcomes.
Applications will be considered on a rolling basis. Decisions will normally be made within one month of the deadline.
Applicants must be members of the Society.
Applicants are normally expected to hold a PhD, or to have completed at least one year’s research towards a PhD. There is no age limit.
Applications to cover costs already incurred, publication costs, conference expenses, or expenses to present invited talks will not be considered.
Individuals normally may make only one application per year and re-applications may not be made for the same project unless invited.
Applications should be made on the form below. The referee named by the applicant should be asked to send a supporting statement directly to the Secretary of the BSHM. In the case of doctoral candidates, the referee should be one of the research supervisors.
Applications will be considered by members of the Society’s Grants Committee, and other experts as appropriate. No interviews will be held. The Society may offer an amount less than that applied for. Details of successful applicants will be published on the Society web site. No correspondence will be entered into except under exceptional circumstances.
Grants will be paid at the start of the agreed award period. Grants not taken up within six months will be cancelled. Successful applicants must submit a financial statement and a 400-600 word report at the end of their award period (usually 12 months). Any publications or conference presentations resulting from the funded research should acknowledge support from the Society.
You can find information on previous successful grants on the previous grants section of this page.
