Call for papers

The British Society for the History of Mathematics will be holding ‘Research in Progress’, its annual meeting for research students, at The Queen’s College, Oxford, on Saturday 27th February 2027. The meeting will be held in person only, and will be held in English. The day provides an opportunity for early-career scholars in the history of mathematics to showcase their current research, and will conclude this year with a keynote lecture by Prof. Karl Sigmund (University of Vienna) whose book, The Waltz of Reason: The Entanglement of Mathematics and Philosophy, was awarded the 2025 BSHM Neumann Prize.

Talks will be around 20 minutes each (followed by time for questions). Research students who are interested in offering a presentation are invited to send a proposed title and abstract (of no more than 250 words) to Christopher Hollings <christopher.hollings@maths.ox.ac.uk> by 31st October 2026. Please include details of your university, supervisor, and whether you are a PhD or a Masters student. The organisers will be in touch shortly thereafter with a decision.

There will also be an opportunity to present posters at the meeting, and Masters students in particular are encouraged to consider this option. If there is insufficient space in the programme, people proposing talks may instead be invited to present a poster.

Registration costs will be waived for speakers, but unfortunately we are unable to guarantee travel or accommodation expenses. If you would like to request funding to speak at the conference please state this when you submit your abstract, and include a detailed budget for your expected expenses. Any funding awarded will rarely be greater than £250.

The day is expected to begin around 10am, and to conclude around 5pm. Further details of the conference will appear here as they become available.
