Leo Creedon—HiMEd Lecturer

Leo Creedon is a mathematician with over 30 years’ experience in industry and academia. His research has been funded by the European Commission, Research Ireland and Enterprise Ireland. His diverse research applies mathematical thinking to understand and solve problems in algebra, health, mathematical biology, medical technology, environmental sciences, AI and ICT.

He is a graduate of University College Cork in Ireland and holds a PhD in mathematics from the University of Alberta in Canada. He is a Senior Lecturer in Mathematics in the Faculty of Engineering and Computing at Atlantic Technological University in Sligo. He is Co-Director of the university’s Centre for Mathematical Modelling and Intelligent Systems for Health and Environment (MISHE). He has served as a Visiting Professor at the Polish Academy of Sciences. Dr Creedon is a former President of the Irish Mathematical Society and is Ireland’s delegate for the Council of the European Mathematical Society and a member of the Irish Committee for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in Mathematics. He is Atlantic Technological University’s Institutional Lead on the Research Ireland centre RINN AI (Rinn Artificial Intelligence: Research & Innovation in Data Science and AI). He also serves on the Royal Irish Academy multidisciplinary committee for Physical, Chemical & Mathematical Sciences.

He is actively engaged in science, engineering and mathematics outreach activities, including Maths Week, Mathematics Enrichment and Irish Mathematical Olympiad training, as well as delivering public talks on scientific topics. He is the National Coordinator of the Irish Mathematical Trust’s Junior Maths Enrichment Programme. These roles are informed by many years of research and teaching from second level to postdoctoral supervision, as well as organising and delivering public engagement events relating to science, engineering, mathematics, and their history.

Topics

Possible HiMEd lecture topics include the following:

  • The history of Irish mathematics and mathematicians (including Robert Murphy and George Gabriel Stokes)

  • The development of algebra and the emergence of abstract structures

  • Historical problems that shaped modern mathematics

  • Connections between historical mathematical ideas and modern applications such as AI, modelling and coding theory

  • Mathematics in 19th-century Ireland, Britain and Europe – Stories of discovery, discrimination and collaboration in mathematics

  • Other topics by agreement
